A Warm, Caring Atmosphere
Our ultimate goal is to improve the quality of our patients' lives. The patients we care for are acutely ill -- typically being cared for in an intensive care unit. They are not ready to be discharged from an acute hospital setting, but could benefit from a new level of care in a more pleasant environment. Some of these patients will recover fully and return to their previous lifestyles. For others, our goal is to help them reach full potential within the limitations of their illness.
A Healing Environment
In addition to their medical needs, staff at The Regional Hospital recognize that a patient's emotional and aesthetic needs are an important part of the healing process. We provide a comfortable setting where families are welcome anytime. Patients are encouraged to bring in items from home to personalize their room. Additionally, an active healing arts program incorporates such things as massage, music and pet therapy, to facilitate a more uplifting and healing environment.
Patient Outings
Once stable, patients who meet our established medical criteria may participate in weekly outings. Patients are transported in cabulances to patient-chosen destinations such as beaches, parks, museums or movies. Professional staff including a physician, nurse and respiratory care practitioner travel with patients to attend to their needs. The goal of these outings is to help patients regain a sense of self, as well as show them that they can successfully survive outside the hospital. We are convinced that these weekly outings contribute powerfully to the restoration of our patients to their community. Initial research results support this.
Family Participation
We believe that family involvement and support impacts a patient's desire to recover. Spouses and other family are a part of their loved one's care team and cheerleaders for their recovery. We value their input and encourage their participation and frequent visits. Visitors are welcome anytime as long as the medical status of the patient permits.
